Is there a comprehensive speed test for throughput on my network?

This is a comprehensive speed test for throughput on your network.  If you are just interested in basic data throughput, perform the basic speed test.  For instructions on how to perform the test, use the keyword ‘speed’ and search the Knowledge Base.

Summary:
Run the throughput tests then send all of the ‘BsThruPutHis_v??.csv’ files found in the BarScanSysuser folder.

Instruction Summary:
1: Select the options in your Personal Program Preferences that will turn on throughput testing.
2: Open the Asset table screen.
3: Fill in the dialog to associate a comment with the specific test. The test will run automatically upon selecting ‘Ok’.
4: Repeat (2) and (3) as often as desired.
5: Turn off throughput testing by unselecting the options in the Personal Program Preferences.
6: Locate the resulting throughput history files. These are found in the BarScan SYSUSER folder and begin with “BsThruPutHis”.
7: Attached and email the “BsThruPutHis” files to BarScan.

Instruction Details:
1: Select the options in your Personal Program Preferences that will turn on throughput testing.

-From the Main menu, select ‘Edit’, then ‘Personal Program Preferences…’.
-Select the ‘Miscellaneous’ tab.
-Put a check mark next to the option “Display operation times for various operations as they happen”, then also next to “Calculate throughput along with operation times”.
-Select the ‘Ok’ button to save your changes.

2: Open the Asset table screen.

Open the Asset table screen either from the main menu (File-> Open-> Asset-> Assets…) or click on the ‘Assets’ button in the ‘Tables’ toolbar.

3: Fill in the dialog to associate a comment with the specific test.  The test will run automatically upon selecting ‘Ok’.

When the Asset screen has been activated and throughput testing is active, you will get a Throughput Comment dialog one the Asset screen appears.  Fill in the comment with identifying information so that you can tell this test apart from others.  Recommended comments could specify whose workstation, why it was done, etc.  Here is a sample screen:

 

 

 

 

 

 

Once you select ‘Ok’ the throughput test will start immediately.  If you select ‘Cancel’, the throughput test will not be done and you can immediately proceed to editing your assets.

When the throughput test is complete, it will show a dialog similar to the following:

 

Once you are done examining the results, select the ‘Ok’ button.  You will immediately be able to proceed to editing your Assets.

4: Repeat (2) and (3) as often as desired.  Note that you will be prompted to do the throughput test until you turn it off in Personal Preferences.  Also, if you are having screens that are of special concern (such as the catalog or transaction screen), opening these screens will also prompt you for throughput tests while testing is active.

5: Turn off throughput testing by unselecting the options in the Personal Program Preferences.

-From the Main menu, select ‘Edit’, then ‘Personal Program Preferences…’.
-Select the ‘Miscellaneous’ tab.
-Remove the check marks next to the options “Display operation times for various operations as they happen” and “Calculate throughput along with operation times”.
-Select the ‘Ok’ button to save your changes.

6: Locate the resulting throughput history files.  These are found in the BarScan SYSUSER folder and begin with “BsThruPutHis”.

The throughput history files are contained within the BarScan SYSUSER folder.  You can discover the exact location of this folder by pressing the ‘Program Folders’ button in the BarScan About dialog. This is accessed from the main menu. Select Help-> About BarScan for Windows, then select the ‘Program Folders’ button.  A dialog will appear with a list of folders used by BarScan.  The list will vary depending upon the current version of BarScan and the various options you are using.  Here is a sample:

7: Attached and email the “BsThruPutHis” files to BarScan.

Within the SYSUSER folder you will find one or more throughput history files.  These begin with “BsThruPutHis” and have a ‘.csv’ extension.  These are readable by Microsoft Excel.  At a minimum, please select the most recently written file, attach it to an email and send it to BarScan Technical Support.  If you are working with a specific technical support representative you may send the email directly to them… they will give you their email address.  If not, please send the file to techsupport@Barscan.com.
